NHS Cheshire and Merseyside September 2025 Blog

As summer draws to a close and children return to school, many of us are adjusting back into familiar routines.

This time of year often brings an increase in childhood illnesses, and simple steps such as encouraging good hand hygiene and making sure children are up to date with their routine vaccinations can make a real difference.

Autumn also marks the period when the NHS ramps up its preparations for winter – traditionally our busiest time of year. Common winter viruses such as flu and RSV can lead to increased demand for urgent and emergency care services.

If you’re eligible, coming forward for your winter vaccinations when you’re invited to will help protect yourself and others from serious illness during the colder months. As an asthmatic I have already booked my NHS flu jab for this winter season.

I am also delighted to share that two areas in our region – Sefton and St Helens – have been selected as first wave sites for the new National Neighbourhood Health Implementation Programme.

The initiative provides those areas with the exciting opportunity to be part of a programme involving 43 areas overall across the country to set up a new neighbourhood health service.

They will build on their current good practice with partners and local communities to improve the health and wellbeing of residents at a neighbourhood level. We look forward to sharing local updates as this national programme progresses.

Finally, I warmly invite you to join us at our 2025 Annual General Meeting on Thursday 25 September in Liverpool, where we will reflect on our performance and achievements over the past year, and share our plans for the future. You can find the full details on our website.

Best wishes,

Cathy Elliott
